Dr. J Drake Wakefield is a board-certified anesthesiologist and fellowship-trained interventional pain management physician dedicated to the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic pain conditions. His clinical focus is on restoring function, improving quality of life, and helping patients return to meaningful daily activities through a balanced approach that integrates conservative therapies, image-guided interventions, and minimally invasive procedures.
Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Wakefield earned his medical degree from the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he gained extensive experience in complex pain physiology, perioperative medicine, and procedural care. He subsequently completed fellowship training in interventional pain management at the University of Kentucky, receiving advanced training in a broad range of interventional techniques for spine and musculoskeletal pain conditions.
At the Spine Institute of Arizona, Dr. Wakefield is part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of a wide spectrum of pain disorders, including spinal, musculoskeletal, and neuropathic conditions. He emphasizes a comprehensive, individualized approach to care that incorporates conservative management, functional restoration strategies, and when appropriate, image-guided interventional procedures aimed at reducing pain and improving overall function.
His clinical expertise includes the treatment of degenerative spine conditions, radicular pain, facet-mediated pain, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, joint and soft tissue pain syndromes, and complex chronic pain conditions. He utilizes a broad range of evidence-based, minimally invasive techniques tailored to each patient’s specific diagnosis and goals.
Known for his approachable and thoughtful manner, Dr. Wakefield prioritizes clear communication, patient education, and shared decision-making.
